Cowgirls fall in a tight non-conference tennis match @NW

How many wise men were there?

How many angles in a triangle?

What number does a Hat trick reflect?

How many times has Kim Kardashian been married?

That’s right.

The magic number is 3.

Three singles matches went to the third set super 10 tiebreaker

Two of the third set matches were decided by less than 3 points (two in fact)

All in all, it was a great night for tennis.  Weather felt like fall.  Ahhhhh, fall, you know, when Women’s tennis is suppose to be played….not in the spring!

Playing 2 out of 3 sets for singles, Audrey Serb, Court 1, blitzed her opponent 0 and 0 in less than 41 minutes.  Clearly she was s step above her opponent.

Annie Vo joined the ranks this week….starting out strong and consistent, her opponent found her legs and push Annie a bit wider, deeper, and forced her to hit a bit higher of a shot….one of those Annie could have overcome, but in short succession stacking upon each other proved too much for Court 2.

Tran Nguyen hit well and deep, but had nothing in the first set against her opponent.  Buckling down, Tran made an impressive showing, holding her serve until the end, but battling through every point.  A very different Tran in the second set than in the first.  It was a good recovery and set the stage nicely for her hitting in dubs.

Nicole has had a hard go of it in singles.  EF…she came up short.  I still vividly remember the match against Ragsdale (It didn’t go her way either)….now facing a bigger hitter but with more angles and power…..1-0….looked good.  1-1, expected.  1-2, loss of a serve.  1-3, ok, 2-3, hope, 2-4, 2-5, 2-6.  Goober.  Yes, Goober.

If the language offends, you must accept my language as being a part of me.  My language and I are one.  Goober is how I roll.

Sometime between the change in sets, Nicole’s twin whom I have never met and did not know existed…while Nicole’ opponent was distracted by something shiny, Swapped places with Nicole and began playing this game….oh, what is it called????  Tennis.  That’s right, tennis.

Finally stepping into the shots, catching them on the rise and hitting a side spin (top spin…over the top, back spin, under the bottom, side spin a variant of top and side causing the ball to travel, if hit at an angle, away from the forehand) to an astonishing level of competence.  The one handed backhand didn’t seem like such a liability and the serves!  The twin – let’s call her Nicole for time’s sake - had been practicing.  Yes, the new Nicole owned the set, flipping the score around 6-2 and never relenting, cruised to a 10-3 win in the third set tiebreak.  Well done Nicole!

Maggi and Shaini were the last two singles to come off the courts.  As hinted to above, both of these not only went to a tiebreak, but these Cowgirls lost their first sets, fought, turned the second set in their favor forcing a tiebreak, and both came up short 8-10 in the third.

Though a loss on paper and perhaps initially in the minds of these wonderful young ladies, As coach and first hand attendee, let me assure you these ladies played with poise and moxie all the way through.

Maggi drew even at 5 all in the first.  Determined, but a bit over enthusiastic, the next two games slipping away from her 5-7.  Determined, she turned in on.  6-1 in the second.  Her opponent could do little as she only held serve once that set.

Shaini first set was simply an exchange of service games until 4 all when Shaini lost a serve and the first set.  The second set began much the same, the exchanging of serves until 4 all and this time Shaini was the victor.

The third set for both could have been announced on each other’s courts.  On serve, down a point, two points, 2-3…..time passes, 4 all on both courts.

Goober!  Yes, I said it again.  It isn’t directed at you, stop being all “extra.” (ha!  How many of you worked the word “extra” into a conversation today?)

4 all.

one court went 4-5, the other 5-4, tied back again at 5.

5-6, 6-6, 6-7. 7-7. 7-8. 8-7

and the last two points went to NW on each court as the Cowgirls were narrowly edged in what became the deciding court(s) in our 4-5 loss to the Vikings.

No, Cowgirls did great.  It is simply the nature of a tiebreak.  The Vikings held the last two points better than we did.  And in doing so, they earned the victory!

Maggi learned she could hit, dictate, and push a player around the court when her shots were consistent and she could extend out the points – the trick…be at ease in your hitting.  Shaini learned that in the face of a bigger hitter and better angled player who could hit deeper, she could hang extraordinarily well.  Both of these courts had opportunities, but their play was beautiful tonight.  The only thing missing was the check in the win column.  Two points short, but incredible growth on courts 5 and 6.

Cowgirls enter into dubs down 2-4 after singles.

Once more the Cowgirls were called upon to deliver three wins across three courts.

If you are not one of the math crowd, that is 100%.

In tennis, that is hard against a quality team.

Court 1 – Serb/Vo (Audrey/Annie)

Up 3-1, brain fart!, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4, 5-4, 6-4, 6-5, and finishing out finally with the last two games to take the set.  In reading up on WebMD®, brain farts are the most common causations of loss in tennis.  But the ladies built it back up.  Though it took more than a few games, at this level, the style of play encountered is an opportunity, not this much of a setback.  Crisis averted, 1 or the three wins needed.

Court 2 – Nguyen/Sopala (Tran and Nicole(the twin))

After their 1-0 start, the Cowgirls were gracious enough o allow the Vikings to keep two of their serves and then all but dominated the rest of the game.  They walked off 8-2.  Another win.

Court 3 – Mugi/Lal (Maggi/Shaini)

After both suffered losses in singles over three sets, this was still the best talent for the court in question.  But they brought in a giant.  Ok, not quite Goliath’s height of 6’9’’ with 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot (now be mindful….the Viking player never took off her shoes and socks….I am assuming she didn’t have 6 toes on each foot, but I have been wrong in these write ups before), but the Viking was tall and had a reach that arched like a rainbow when she extended her arms.

Did I say skilled yet?

With the new one’s height and Emma’s (Emma White, Marsha White’s [former Health Science Teacher at SW before Dusek and Puckett] daughter – yes, she is doing quite well, She is an NP now at one of the Novant clinics in Oak Ridge) lifted and well angled, powerful shots, the Cowgirls fought the good fight, but unlike David with a sling and 5 smooth stones, Court 3 did not turn out in our favor.  If we had a sling shot, that might have turned the tide in our favor….gotta ask Christman about ordering those for the girls.

Though we lost on court 3, coach is quick to encourage both Maggi and Shaini.  In the face of a larger, bigger hitting, and net dominating pair, the Cowgirls played very well.  We need to work on lifts/lobs as well net play against more aggressive hitters, but this is par for the course.  Both Cowgirls fought well…just this time it didn’t fall our way.

The Cowgirls fall to 1-2 on the season and will host Parkland on Monday at home in conference action.
