Cowgirls over the Lady Falcons of SEG 8-1 in conf tennis action

The Lady Falcons played well tonight.  They were much improved in each of their talent spots from the first time we played.  On both sides, things were just a bit more relaxed.

The rundown.

Audrey and Anna were kept in singles play.  Lauren went to dubs with Anna.

Jada and Church both played way up in singles.

Rachael (Birthday girl on Tuesday!!!!!) and Betsy were held out of singles for dubs.

Bella Johnson and Tamara Davis played up for singles.

Elena Perko and Caroline Christman played up for Dubs.

Audrey had little difficulty playing her opponent.  Though the match labored for a bit while the Lady Falcon’s gumption elevated her level of play while Audrey simply played her game to much the same result…the Falcon just put up a greater fight with longer rallies to extend a few games out.  Audrey wins 0 and 2.

Anna, playing #3 last time, now #2… had a longer match than Audrey, but in playing up, was able to impress upon the Lady Falcon her game, keeping the ball in play and moving her around nicely.  Though the tenacity of the Lady Falcon allowed her feet to move with ease, the shot selection failed to keep up with her impressive footwork as Anna won soundly 0 and 1.

Jada and Church, normally 6 and 7 respectively, both played up 3 spots. And both won!

It took the better paert of the first set to understand what she was doing in allowing her foe to keep pace with her game.  “Aha!” She was hitting back to the Lady Falcon.  It is amazing how easy hitting gets when you do not have to move to the ball, rather, the ball magically comes to you.  Correcting this error, Jada was able to outpace her opponent with her side to side offerings to finish out the first set 6-3.  The second set went even smoother.  With little fight left in the Lady Falcon, Jada rolled to a 6-0 in the second.  3 and 0 to win.

Church’s path was a bit more difficult.  Though playing sound tennis, Church made a line call that didn’t sit well with the Lady Falcon.  As such, the Lady Falcon raised her game…greatly.  Now Coach has seen a 2-4 game bump in play, but not in his recollection has he seen a call elevate the shots of another in such a dramatic way.  The Lady Falcon began to MOVE! And HIT!  Her game transformed from a near the service line to almost exclusively back to the baseline forcing Church back a bit further.  In defense, Church too began to hit a better ball…side to side once more…and LONGER points.  These two stayed on serve through the first 8 games of the second set 4-4.  A rare break for the Cowgirl and then the hold.  Caroline Church outplays a vastly improved Falcon 6-3, 6-4.

Bella Johnson and Tamara Davis hosted the #5 and #6 falcons on their courts.  Bella handled her Falcon with relative ease.  Bella’s hits and consistency was simply too much for the Falcon.  1 and 0.

Tamara had a bit more difficulty with her opponent.  These two played almost as equals through the first 9 games of the 1st set, when Tamara was able to break the spirit and serve of the Falcon.  The second set went well with the Falcon only holding once.  4 and 1 for the win.

Cowgirls won the match 6-0 in singles.

Wanting to play Lauren to test out her arm from last week. Coach partnered with Anna at #1 dubs.  Rachael and Betsy #2.  Christman and Perko - #3 dubs.

Anna and Lauren had their hands full.  Not liking the outcome of her singles v Audrey, the Falcon #1, played exceptionally well against the Cowgirls.  Taking over on not a few points, the Falcons forced the two Cowgirls to raise their games.  And they did.

Back and forth throughout the pro-8 set, three breaks between the two teams, the Cowgirls finally pull up even at 7.  Net play was fierce as well as a good amount of baseline back and forth…though not quite rallies if the reader understands.  Finally a break and hold so the Cowgirls outlast the Falcons 9-7.

Rachael and Betsy played a lot more aggressively than in games past.  Though not always on target with their shots, their exuberance gave them an advantage the Falcons couldn’t overcome.  Serves were good from all.  Cross court shots and returns.  We simply need to work on cutting off the returns more effectively.  The elements are there…just a bit more work will shine up this aspect of these two Cowgirl’s games wonderfully.  Cowgirls win 8-5.

Perko and Christman came up short tonight.  Though shot for shot, a stronger team, they also hit their fair share of shots out the back end of the courts.  Hone the power.  Control the shots.  The good news is their serves went very well tonight.  Shot selection and power control will see them to rise to the next level of play in short time.  5-8.
