Girls Varsity Tennis vs. Northwest Senior HS School

Game Date
Sep 30, 2014
Score
COWBOYS: 1
NORTHWEST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL: 8

Northwest never conjures up thoughts of teddie bears and warm fuzzies, and today was no different.  They were ready for a match against our Cowgirls.

The cowgirls, with a slightly adjusted line up, faced off with the Vikings for the second time in Conference play this season.  Having fortune smile upon us with impressive play at #6 and a near win (loss in a tiebreaker) at #1, the cowgirls were poised and ready as well.

Sophia Nagy (#2) faced off against one of the most solid tennis games in the conference.  Although unable to gain much footing, Sophia fought hard, tiring her opponent before her doubles match.  Hannah Mills, relatively new to #3, Catherine Jobe (#4), and Mai Vo (#6) also fought the good fight, but eventually succumbed to the onslaught from their respective opponent.

Erin Shelton (#5) held her opponent off nicely in the first set, splitting serves until NW was able to take the break and win the first.  And though playing one of the best matches of her senior year, eventually lost 4 and 2.

But the match of the day went to Maggie Jermyn (#1).  Though losing to NW's #1 Wofford in three sets, the last by a score of 11-9, Maggie set her mind to winning, exploding out the door and dismantling Wofford 6-1 in the first.  Though tight in their rallies, Clearly Maggie had the mental and playing edge.  With a meeting of the minds, Coach and Maggie debated strategy for the set ahead, knowing full well Wofford was too good of a playing to go down easily in the 2nd.  And she came out swinging.  On serve throughout the entire match, Maggie finally with an opportunity to prevail at 5-4, but into duece and a loss on return of serve, 5-5.  Maggie's serve, beginning to tire, went long, but she was able to get her second in and begin the rally.  winning on serve, 6-5.  Wofford's serve.  Maggie up love - 15, love - 30, 15 - 30, 15-40, and breaking her opponent's serve for the first time that set, Maggie Jermyn prevails, the first win v Northwest in singles play during the Coach Murphy era.

Congratulations Maggie!!!

In dubs action, prepping for conference play, Jobe and Mills took on the #1 dubs of NW, though fighting hard, lost 2-8.  #2 dubs Shelton/Carley Anne Bullman and #3 Vo/Katherine Quinn both played impressively but narrowly lost 6-8 to their respective opponents.

Though SW falls in conference action, they all had incredible matches!!!

SW falls to 10-6 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

The Cowgirls take on the bison at home on Wednesday 10/1
