Girls Varsity Tennis vs. Conference Tournament

As you all read the entry for Day 1 of Cowgirl Tennis Conference Tourney,
I now give you day 2….it is much shorter.

Maggie Jermyn, #1 for SW and ranked #2 overall for conference play, entered today’s semifinal round facing off against her Northwest counterpart…Ms. Wofford.

Having lost in a tiebreaker during the first meeting, Maggie prevailed in the second meeting in straight sets, now, once more, they face each other.

With a 3pm start, Maggie quickly took the initiative and though some deuce points ensued, seemingly was aglow with her 4-1 score.  But then, Wofford changed her play.  Clearly this was not settling well with her playing compass and 1…2….3 games later, a tie at 4-4.  Maggie struggled with serve and the hard returns from her opponent but managed to hold pulling ahead 5-4.  Wofford wasn’t finished yet.  She too held serve (5-5) and in a very quick return of service, broke Maggie’s serve (5-6).  Still struggling, Maggie pulled close with three deuce points but hit a shot wide and the set 5-7 NW.

Coach, giving sage advice (or at least that is how coach remembers it), spoke to the heart of the matter, reminding Maggie the new set starts with a clean slate….get back mentally and play her game….well, not to brag on coach, but it worked.

Maggie charged forward once more.

Now at the cusp of a second set victory, Wofford holds.

With a brief chat, Maggie settles her affairs and wins

Now with sets split the tiebreaker awaits.

Not that coach needs antacids to watch his cowgirl tennis players, but I hear it really helps in the close ones.

Wofford serve first.  Out of sorts from both sides, Wofford pushes wide, 1-0 Maggie.

Wofford, clearly drained and devoid of any energetic vivre, loses her next two serves

Maggie once more with her confidence in check, rallies for a 23 shot marathon, eventually taking the point with an aggressive shot into the corner.

And with the style indicative of Maggie, playing a deep, yet floating game waiting her opportunity to pounce – either by playing deep or hitting a short drop shot, Maggie closes off the next 4 points

5-7, 6-2, 10-1

Playing the number one seed of the conference and #1 from Ragsdale - Largen, Maggie hadn’t had much traction in the two previous meetings, but with a goal of bettering her first two attempts, Maggie began.
In a surprising twist, Largen didn’t immediately began her on court domination, rather, hit wide, long, and a couple of times inside the lines – enabling Maggie to claim the first game victory.  Now having tied her previous best against Largen, Maggie set to work playing her own game, readying her play for the tough Regional opponents Friday next.  In short, Largen won 6-1, 6-1, but Maggie took Largen to multiple deuces both on her serve and return of serve.  Clearly this was a great end to a wonderful Conference season.
