Southwest Cowgirls hosting the lady Cougars of HPCA in tennis action

Kyra Akande court 1

Mai Vo court 2

Sam Hamrick court 3

Katelyn Leinbach court 4

Meghan Whalen court 5

Gretchen Cross court 6

Kyra and Mai had little trouble dismissing the lady cougars from the top two courts.  With solid play and sound serving the duo on individual courts claimed the first two wins on the night.

Sam was the first causality of the evening.  Though playing hard, Sam could do little against the consistent onslaught of her opponent and fell in her match.

Katelyn began up but as the match progressed, her opponent heated up.  Smacking the ball hard and deep, Katelyn held tight but eventually succumbed to the lady cougar.

Meghan came out strong too, but faulted with her shots going wide and deep in subsequent games.  Unable to muster enough tools from her toolbox, Meghan falls 8-3.

Gretchen's match proved difficult to watch.  Give and take, ebb and flow.  Gretchen played great!  But her opponent stepped up her game as well, answering each shot Gretchen delivered.  Up 6-5, Gretchen let it slip, 6-6

7-9 match - Gretchen battled, but couldn't overcome the Lady Cougar.

Well played by the cowgirls but HPCA goes up 4-2 going into dubs.

Vo/Ellen Druebbisch court 1

Akande/Kristen Taylor court 2

Hamrick/Whalen court 3

Down 2-4, the Cowgirls will need to sweep dubs to win the match.

Kyra and Kristen were the first off in dubs.  With Kyra's hard hitting continuing into her dubs game and Kristen quite competent at both the net and baseline, the two cowgirls easily handled the Cougars bringing home the first win of the night in dubs.

Ellen returns to play after a week plus one day on the injured list.  If the reader recalls, our match last Monday v HPC saw Ellen viciously twisting her ankle.  With swelling more under control, Mai and Ellen took to court.  Unable to push off as old and having to keep her feet secure before hitting, Mai and Ellen began a break down but were able to advance their cause, pulling even and breaking the Cougars giving them a game up.  They finished the match like champs, 8-6.  A great come back.

Tied up at 4-4 in matches, all focus goes to court #3.

Sam and Meghan, though they did not fare too well against their singles opponents, together they decided to get the job done.

Incredible play from the Cowgirls!!!!!  Taking the third dubs court ensured SW the dubs sweep and the match win 5-4.

Reflecting, in my 8th year of coaching, I haven’t had the joy of seeing my ladies come from behind, down 2-4, to win it 5-4 – in effect, sweeping dubs when we absolutely needed it.

A great win for the Cowgirls.  A great comeback!
