September 29, 2016 - EF

Southwest hosts EF's Lady Eagles in a rain (and hail) delayed match from yesterday.

Kyra Akande court 1

Mai Vo court 2

Meghan Whalen court 3

Kristen Taylor court 4

Johianna Apolinario court 5

Holly Galvan court 6

Mai exited the courts first, blistering her opponent 0 and 1.  Though the lady eagle could hold to some of the base line rallies, Mai's ability to drop the ball short and move her across the court, deep in the corners proved the finishing touch in Mai's victory.

Kyra struggled through the first set, trading shots with her opponent.  Down on serves Kyra broke but settled into a 6-6 tie....tiebreaker.  Once more trading shot for shot across the net, the two tie it up again in the tiebreaker 6-6.  Catching two excellent shots, Kyra finishes off her opponent 7-6, (8-6) in the tiebreaker.  With the momentum in hand, Kyra cruises to a 6-2 victory in the 2nd.

Meghan jostled with her opponent for the first couple of games until finally going up a break and clinching the first set.  With this edge, she quickly defeated her foe in the second.  Final score 4 and 3.

Kristen battled with her opponent in the first set which was characterized with lobs aplenty from both sides of the court.  Going up a break late in the set, Kristen took the set 6-4.  Exhausted, her opponent did little in mustering up the game she had in the first set.  Final score 4 and 0.

Holly held tight in her first set victory over her opponent.  A tight first set with only Holly’s break of her opponent’s serve to distance herself for the 1st set win.  Starting down 3-1 in the second, Holly had her work cut out for her.

A great comeback for the beginning player.

But the match of the night will have to go to Johianna.  Johianna was very evenly matched against a competent Lady Eagle who could run around and deliver the shots just like Johianna….a mirror of sorts.  Falling down a break, Johianna clawed her way back, eventually bringing it even at 6 all.  In another epic tiebreaker, Johianna comes from behind to clench the first set 7-6 (7-5).  Not out of the waters yet, the Lady Eagle still has something to prove.  Johianna, finding a winning shot combination to pull her out to the forehand side and deliver on to the backhand, was able to stay just ahead of her opponent and at last, break her and pull ahead for the win, 6-4, in the second.

2 hours, 12 minutes.  Johianna secures the longest match of the season thus far.

Dubs:

Sam Hamrick/Gretchen Cross Court 1

Heaven Dukes/Micah Welborn Court 2

Ellen Druebbisch/Linsie Ravel Court 3

Having secured the win for the Cowgirls, I was able to play up a bit to give some of the other ladies a chance to play something other than exhibition.

Ellen and Linsie were the first off the courts for dubs.  Partnering the two up for a great big thank you to the seniors for a hard season’s work, Ellen’s deft play at the net coupled with Linsie’s play from the baseline did short work to the Lady Eagles on Court 3.

Unfortunately, Courts 1 and 2 didn’t turn out as favorable for the Cowgirls.  Hamrick and Whalen battled hard but were unable to dethrone the #1 dubs team from EF.  Welborn and Dukes too had a great time at play, posting solid points and long rallies, but finally succumbed to a very talented team on Court 2.

Final score 7-2 Cowgirls.
