Cowgirls host Mt Tabor in conference tennis action

After warm ups with the ladies, I noticed there was a new face on the Mt Tabor team.  Thinking little about it, the two teams met, announced their line-ups and we ushered them off to their respective courts.  In leaving the courts, the Mt Tabor Coach reminded me the new face was the new player from Virginia, ranked 17th in the state.  Now Cowboys, having one more player doesn’t seem a lot on other teams….a better pitcher on the mound, a pinch hitter every rotation, that one star setter, but in an individual sport like tennis, golf, one star pushes down the rest of your talent and makes the entire team better.

With a new number 1

Old #1 became 2

Old #2 became 3

Old #3 became 4

4 -> 5

5 -> 6

6 – didn’t play singles.

Getting edged out 2-4 in singles play last time didn’t bode well for our fearless adventurers this time.

Now before we get to the match itself, the writing above is considered foreshadowing.  I have picked up a few writing devices during my time in high school and try to use them to impress the English teachers on the Ranch.  I can only think my College English professor Ms. Tilley would make me rewrite it several time to focus the writing, making it more concise.  She was a good egg.

Matching up differently and up higher than last time, singles fared better than expected.

Kyra threw everything she had, and her opponent played like a wall.  Up on a few games, Kyra was able to do no more.  The wall won.

Mai played the former #1, now #2.  Mai played very much her game this match – more relaxed and was able to hit her corners and dictate many points.  Mai bettered her previous attempt 3 and 4.

Meghan, played the previous #2, played quite well.  With a more relaxed temperament, Meghan was able to draw out the points, forcing her opponent to raise her game.  Serves were trouble on both sides due to the blustery winds (another Hundred Acre Wood reference).  As with Mai, Meghan was able to get behind her shots and play her game.  Given her opponent could counter most of her attacks, but Meghan didn’t give up even up to the last point.  Kudos Meghan.  This commitment and work ethic on the court will push Meghan to even better play as she and the other underclassmen take the mantle from the seniors from this year and continue the traditions and winning ways.

Sam played her opponent from last time.  I dare say I didn’t see Sam over hit but a handful of times throughout her singles match.  This was no small accomplishment.  Baseline duels were the norm throughout play.  Many deuce games earned, few converted, Sam held nicely with her opponent before the match’s end.

Gretchen playing former #5 hit out of her mind throughout play.  Able to hit above her head (for one of the first times this season), Gretchen rallied very well and even hit her corners.  A half step short in the longer rallies, her opponent was able to break and pull away.  Point to point though, a complete tennis game.

The highlight from the singles side short of the consistent and competitive play the rest of the top six exhibited was found on court 5.  Katelyn played former #4, Meghan’s opponent from the last meeting between these two teams.  Her opponent, a temper with hard shots forced Katelyn to anticipate and run faster and further than Katelyn thought possible.  Holding the lead on serve throughout the 1st set, Katelyn broke her opponent giving the Cowgirls the 1st set.  Unable to mentally focus, Katelyn’s opponent couldn’t put more than 2/3 shots together as Katelyn rolled her 6-1 in the 2nd, giving the Cowgirls the lone win in singles.  A good win in singles.

1-5 Mt Tabor after singles.

Having ceded the match to Mt Tabor after singles, the Cowgirls still played full up in doubles to get ready for Conference play.  With the new ringer in for dubs play, Meghan/Sam played better than expected, taking 3 games off of the well oiled machine of a dubs team.  Spirited hitting and fast hands at the net showcased the match.

Kyra/Mai fared a bit worse overall on score.  With the opponents #2 dubs team together once more (#2 sat out the first encounter with the Cowgirls), there was little the Cowgirls could do to change the direction of the match.

Once more Katelyn came through in the pinch.  Partnered with Gretchen, #3 dubs held tight to their opponents through the first 8 games of the match, either holding or trading serves.  Then the Cowgirls broke.  Understand the play was not as fast paced as that on courts #1 or 2, but for these ladies, the angles and well placed corners shots from each side of the net were incredible.  Lots of running and intense points at the net were great to watch.
