Cowgirls hosting the Lady Eagles of East Forsyth in nonconference tennis action

East Forsyth, former conference rival from the great days in 4-A, came to visit the Ranch and do battle with the Cowgirls tennis team.  Having a quality team in years past, with the beginning of this year the Lady Eagles began play without their 4 seniors from last year.  Only two of the Eagles returned to the top 6 while the remainder of the roster was filled out with two promising freshmen, a sophomore and a junior.

In light of this and making sure the Cowgirls do not have an easy route this close to the conference tourney, I sat Kyra, Sam and Katelyn while moving Gretchen, Lauren, and Holly up into rotation for varsity singles play today.

Mai played Lola.  If memory serves you well from last season’s Conference Tourney, Lola played the game of her season and took out a motivated Kyra in the second round of conference, earning her spot in the 3rd round and a place in regional play.  Today was not a repeat of last year.  From the get go, Mai had Lola on the run.  Though an excellent runner and hitter, Lola didn’t have the game needed to push off Mai from the mountain top.  Mai prevailed 10-5.

I was torn when I put the line up together for this match.  In sitting Kyra, do I play Sam and allow Meghan an easier match at 3?  Or challenge Meghan with what could be described as her playing twin?  After changing the line up three times throughout today, I finally decided to challenge her and test her meddle further.  Was this an incredible hitting match like RJR with Kyra?  No.  But Meghan had to play her game.  She had to draw her opponent to the net and push her back.  Corners, deep shots, check and check.  And then repeat.  Easy?  Still the answer remains “No.”  Serves were held, broken, held, and broken again.  The sun was a huge factor on Court 2.  Setting westward as such it does every evening in recent memory, the rays shined straight into the eyes of the players as they served away from the school.  Down as late as 6-7, Meghan rallied in the shade, holding and breaking – 8-7.  A hold from her opponent and once more from Meghan, 9-7.  Breaking her opponent once more, Meghan closed out the match, 10-7.

Lanie’s match on court 3 was staggering in the length of rallies and lack of breaks in the first 12 games of the set (Pro-10).  Coming over after holding to bring it to 6-5, Lanie lamented how she should have eaten more for lunch.  Immediately feeding her the well balanced and nutritious meal of PB Nabs (Peanut Butter Crackers for all of you millennials), fruit snacks, and other carby goodness.  Allowing her to rest a few, Lanie once more took to the courts.  Unable to break her opponent, 6-6, Lanie readied her serve.  I am not saying fruit snacks are a secret weapon used in the throes of tight matches for quick and unsustainable energy, but once we fed Lanie just a package of these secret energy divinities, she fired off 4 straight games and finished the match 10-6.  Rainey, give me a call and I will tell you which brand to buy the football team.

Gretchen took control over court 4 play and opponent.  Bantering in shots for the first few games, Gretchen broker her opponent twice. Unable to mount a defense, the Lady Eagle continued to run and push, but to little effect.  Gretchen finished 10-5.

Lauren and Holly, 5 and 6 respectively, also played their twin.  Both courts were up 2-1.  Both courts were down 2-3.  Both courts reversed that trend and took it to 4-3…..almost in lockstep with each other’s play.  Lauren pulled ahead and faltered again to bring it to 6-7.  Resolve firmly planted, Lauren held, broke, held, and broke one last time to clinch her match 10-7.  Holly went down 5-6, 5-7, 6-7, 6-8, 6-9.  Clearly not looking too great for the Cowgirl, Holly found some of the resolve pouring out from court 5, 7-9, 8-9, and finally the opponent pushed hard and took the comeback victory from Holly 8-10.

Yes we won in singles.  But more than that, the ladies earned every “W” in the score book.

5-1 Cowgirls after singles.

Dubs:

Preparing for conference play, I sat Mai on the bench with Kyra.  In turn, Kyra was able to work on her cheer skill set for the entire evening.  It is ok, the cabana boys kept her cool even when the sun bore down.  We value the health and comfort of our players on the tennis team.

Sam and Meghan walked out to Court 1 for dubs.  Quickly they were thrust into the mix.  Down 1, broke and hold, up 2-1, on serve and broken twice, 2-5.  The Lady Eagles hold, Cowgirls hold and the Lady Eagles walk away with the game score.  Game play was much tighter.  The net play a highlight of the match from both sides, but the dubs talent of their opponents shined brighter and eclipsed the play fo the Cowgirls on court 1.

Gretchen and Katelyn held court on 2.  Trading serves for the first two games only, the Cowgirls held the next 4 serves and broke the Lady Eagles 3 ties in their runaway victory 8-1.

Johaina and Maggie Mugi (Early College) partnered up on court 3.  Though the play was tight, the score was a widening chasm beginning at 2-2 and never pulling closer.  Good movement along the baseline and well positioned net player made all of the difference for the Cowgirls – winning 8-2.

2-1 Dubs in favor of the Cowgirls.
