Mens Varsity Basketball vs. Mount Tabor HS School

Game Date
Feb 9, 2018
Score
COWBOYS: 64
MOUNT TABOR HIGH SCHOOL: 48

Senior night here on the ranch featured the Cowboys hosting the Spartans of Mount Tabor. In the previous matchup, the Spartans eeked out a win in the last second of the game thanks to a loose ball foul which gave them free throws to reclaim the lead. Could the Cowboys rebound for the Seniors and end the regular season on a high note? The teams traded a couple of disjointed possessions, but it was the Cowboys of Southwest that got on the board first with at 3 pointer to go up 3-0 to take the lead for good on the night. The Spartans responded and got the game as close as it would be on the night at 3-2 at the 5:32 mark. From there the Cowboys senior lineup caught fire as they hit six three pointers in the frame to pace the hosts out to a 22-11 lead at the close of the first quarter. The heat wave slowed slightly but the embers were still bright as they connected for three more in the second frame and the margin peaked at 37-21 with 2:35 to go. The Spartans kept battling and the first half closed with the red hot Cowboys up 42-27. The second half came to a grinding stand still for the Cowboys. Poor shots and sloppy play allowed the Spartans to open the third quarter on a 7-0 run to cut it to 42-34. Another Cowboys three pointer stopped the run and got the margin back to double digits at 45-34 at the 5:35 mark. From there the pace of the game screeched down to stop and go traffic on Wendover at 5:00 pm. Trading sloppy possessions and poor free throw shooting really limited both sides. With just 2:00 to go in the third, Mount Tabor got it back to 46-37, but a 4-0 spurt to close the frame made it 50-37 going into the final frame. The fourth quarter had some more back and forth as once again the Spartans rallied to cut the deficit thanks to some untimely turnovers by the Cowboys. Tabor got as close as 56-44 with 2:27 to go. The Cowboys would not let this one slip away as they regrouped themselves and really controlled the ball and the tempo the rest of the way and managed to fend off the Spartans for a solid 64-48 conference win to send the regular season and send our Seniors out on a great note. Mount Tabor was led by Isaiah Wilkins with 22 points. The Cowboys were led by; JT Butler (17 points, 9 Assists, 3 Steals), Cooper Cunningham (15 points, 7 Rebounds, 3 Assists), and Christian Martin (13 points, 2 Assists). Thanks again for the Seniors, JT Butler, Jamell Carter, Ty Radford, Jalen Snipes, Cooper Cunningham, and Collin Wilson for great careers!
