WESTERN GUILFORD HIGH SCHOOL: 49

The Cowboys hosted the Hornets of Western Guilford in Piedmont Triad 3A conference action tonight. Southwest was looking to keep their terrific season rolling and the Hornets were hoping to get back in the win column and stop their current 8 game skid. The Cowboys and Hornets opened the game up by trading baskets, and the Hornets held a brief 4-2 lead. Some sloppy play ensued, but a quick 9-0 spurt almost settled things down for Southwest to make it 11-4 at the 4:01 mark. Some more uncharacteristic play by the hosts allowed for a 4-0 blip by Western and it was 11-8. Yet again a quick burst of offense by Southwest pushed it out to 17-8. This pattern continued and the opening frame closed with Southwest only ahead 22-12. The Hornets continued to take advantage of the Cowboys miscues and kept the game tight. The first few minutes of the frame seemed as if the Cowboys were starting to run away with the game as it got to 31-14 at the 4:12 mark. However, the Hornets swarmed around and played the Cowboys roughly even the rest of the half and the halftime score was 40-25. The third quarter once again had the teams trade baskets quickly and it was 42-27. A simply 5-0 spurt made it 47-27 at the 5:45 point. Western stopped the run with a 3 pointer of their own to make it 47-30 at the 5:30 mark. The next 2 minutes were a more familiar sight for the Southwest faithful as the Cowboys started to put some more enthusiasm and pride on both sides of the ball with a solid 12-0 run to make the game 59-30 at the 3:33 mark. Another 3 pointer by the Hornets stopped the streak, and got another bucket as well and it was 59-35. The Cowboys' bench yet again showed how deep this roster is with their intensity as Southwest started streaking again to close the frame with an 8-0 run, but a deep banked 3 pointer by Western closed the frame at 67-38. In the final frame the depth of the Cowboys proved to be enough to stretch the margin as they played effectively on both sides of the ball as the game closed out for a 87-49 conference win for the Cowboys. Southwest stays perfect on the season as 21-0 and 9-0 in the Piedmont Triad 3A Conference. The Hornets were led by Isaiah Cassell with 14 points. Southwest once again placed several players in double figures. Joel Pettiford with (15, 8 Rebs, 3 Asts, 2 Stls, Blk), Christian Martin with (13, 6 Rebs, 2 Asts, Blk), Keyshaun Langley with (12, 4 Stls, 2 Asts, 2 Rebs), Jayden Turner with (10, 5 Rebs, 3 Asts, 3 Stls, Blk), and Bryce Causey with (10, 3 Stls, Reb, Ast).
