Cowgirls over the Lady Hornets of Western in Conference tennis action 8-1

Anchored by a strong player at the top gave the Hornets of a western a bit of room to run against the Cowgirls of Southwest. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t run far.

Down on 1, up on 2, 4, 5, 6 and a scoring snafu on 3.
And so it began on Southwest courts tonight.

Annie Bodin attacked, ran, attacked, and broke every serving attempt from her opponent vanquishing her 0 and 0.

Lauren Cook and Bea Calwitan, courts 5 and 6, both played their games and only allowed their opponents to hold one of their service games as they rolled to victory, 0 and 1 on both courts.

Gretchen Cross’ opponent was quality, answering most shots Gretchen hit across the net, but Gretchen was able to distance herself over the long rallies.  With a solid serve and near perfect backhands, the lead began to grow. Holding every time and breaking all but once, Gretchen cruises to. 6-1 decision in the first set.  Gathering herself the Lady Hornet held tight to her play forcing multiple deuces in the games and managed to claw herself back with three service games held, but Gretchen was the overcomes tonight, holding her own serve and inflicting service causalities on her opponent, Gretchen earned the victory 1 and 3 overall.

Laney Van Dorp  began down. Down in a big way.  By the time I was able to chat with her the placards told a story of 1-4.  Now I was watching 4 matches at a time, and I saw no indication in Laney’s play of this impending disaster.

Then it changed. What I mean was it literally changed, the placards (scorecards).  Laney had thought we were red numbers and not the black numbers. We weren’t down, we were up!  Laney’s opponent was one of the bigger hitters Laney had faced this season. A young lady from down under (yes, Australia) with a big , high topspin hit that kept Laney back, but Laney’s game was on, pushing her left and right, keeping her back too, it was a simple game of attrition….and Laney had the hole shot taking out her opponent 2 and 2 in a really good game.

Meghan ran against a very competent, big hitter herself.  Going down 0-3 early on, Meghan held serve and broke her opponents.  Cat and mouse ensued all of the way to 4-6 in the first. Playing quality tennis, deep hitting, strong topspin hitting, her opponent simply had an answer o most of Meghan’s shirts in a very close, deuce filled match.  Unable to sustain her momentum in play, the deuces no longer fell Meghan’s way as the score unfairly reported a loss 4 and 0. Clearly, the match was much tighter than the score shows.

Up 5-1 after singles, the Cowgirls had secured the win for the match.

On to dubs!

8-2

By some small not quite miracle, all three dubs teams ended up with the exact same score.

Whalen/Cross jumped to a commanding lead and all but decimated their opponents game.

Bodin and Cook, first time together. Played to their strengths, height and solid crosscourt shots, securing the net for SW, and didn’t look back.

Maggie Mugi (early college) and Kirsten Blunder partnered together on court three, playing their game, were able to overcome their opponents for the win.

Dubs ended 3-9 in favor is the Cowgirls.

The cowgirls raise to 10-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
