The Cowgirls charged to an early lead sweeping the bottom 4 singles matches in straight sets, but the real play was happening on courts 1 & 2.
Maggie Jermyn, surviving a brief fright from rival Glenn last week, went to work immediately, playing a hard fought 1st set, but ultimately losing 4-6. Though hitting hard and true, all of her shots were ending up in the sweet spot of her opponent. With a change in game plan, allowing the ball to bounce a bit higher, Maggie surged ahead in the second 2-1 and never looked back, ultimately taking the next 4 games straight for a 6-1 second set win. Maggie, full of confidence and her opponent trying to find her footing, sailed to a well deserved 10-5 victory in the third and in doing so, sealed the win fo the Cowgirls (5-0) in single play.
Sophia Nagy, upset by Glenn #2, was hungry for a win and boy did she put on a show. Trailing in the first set, Sophia dug deep and pulled ahead 5-4, dropping the next game (5-5), dropping yet another, pulled out several impressive rally and net play to bring it to 6-6....a tiebreaker. Never faltering in her resolve, Sphia pulled out an quick 7-3 victory in the tiebreaker. Undaunted, Her opponent roared back with impressive ground strokes and pulled a second set win 3-6. Now for the third set, super tiebreaker (first to 10 by two). Trading barbs back and forth, the score now ties at 8 all, it was anyone's game. With clarity of mind and body, and two long rallies, Sophia came out ahead, 10-8 in the third giving Southwest a 6-0 in singles. At publishing, Sophia now holds the Fall 2014 season record for longest match at 2 hrs 4 minutes.
The Cowgirls doubles proved too much for the Hornets, where #2 and #3 doubles, Nagy/Shelton and Jobe/Mills respectively, cruised to 8-0 victories on both courts. #1 dubs were at ease, with the match already decided, Jermyn/Carley Anne Bullman, with a bit of perserverence, won the final match of the day 8-5, giving the Cowgirls their first 9-0 win over Western in recent History.
Way to Go Cowgirls!!
Cowgirls rise to 7-1 overall and remain 1-0 in the conference.
