Southwest loses a heartbreaker 2-7 against a capable and talents lady Bison squad.
At first glimpse, the cowgirls showed strong in the first sets, taking 4 of the 6 first sets handedly. Catherine Jobe (#4) and Maggie Jermyn (#1) went on to win their singles matches with little issue. Nagy fought hard but fell to a very skilled #2 from HPC 2 and 2.
The real heartbreak began on courts #3 and #6 where despite their best efforts, Erin and Mai respectively could not stop the second set comebacks from their opponents. Erin 2-6, Mai 1-6. Determined they began their third set tiebreakers. Though playing their game, their opponents had something left in the tank and were able to finish out the matches 10-3 and 10-6. Excellent matches with excellent play, but not quite enough to take the win.
The match of the night belonged to Hannah Mills at #5. Down early in the first set, Hannah could do little with precise and low hitting from her opponent. 6-2 HPC. After a brief pep talk, Hannah began to play her game. Taken back, HPC had no answer for the crosscourt and down the line strokes of Hannah...6-3 SW. And on the the third and final set - a tiebreaker (a super 10). Hannah dug herself a hole early on, down 0-3, but fought hard and evened it up at 3-3 on the changeover (in tiebreakers, opponents swap side at multiples of 6). HPC scores the next two shots, Hannah the next, HPC with the answer. change again at 4-6. HPC, SW, SW, with the final 4 points, SW only won one, HPC with a victory at #5. The play was beautiful, but in the end, HPC in this match as well with the match as a whole, proved too much for the Cowgirls.
Doubles were 3-0 HPC, with great play at #1 and #3 doubles, both losing 6-8 with glimpses of a win, but both coming up short. #2 doubles ran aground against a very tough HPC team, making little head way in their 3-8 loss.
Southwest takes a breather tomorrow, returning to play on Wednesday @ Glenn.
The Cowgirls fall to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
