Girls Varsity Tennis vs. Ragsdale HS

Game Date
Sep 18, 2014
Score
COWBOYS: 3
RAGSDALE HS: 6

From a rain postponed match from two weeks back, the Cowgirls traveled to Tiger country to face the Ladies of Ragsdale in our first of two dual team meetings this season.  The Tigers had just come off a devastating loss to #1 ranked Northwest in conference play yesterday, but they had their game faces on, ready to bring their best once the Cowgirls took to the courts.

1-6 we began play.  Immediately, Ragsdale #1, 3, 4 courts took flight, lifting their own to quick success in the first sets, much to the chagrin of the Cowgirls.  The second sets fared better with the Cowgirls stepping out of their traditional games and really hitting out, bringing the games closer with multiple dueces as well a few more game wins.  But that was it, Ragsdale went up 3-0 in singles.

Courts #2 and #6, though not panning out for the Cowgirls, showed great heart and play in their marathon matches v the Lady Tigers.  Sophia Nagy, (SW #2), took her opponent to task, with excellent groundstrokes and net play, all but had her in the first, finally losing 6-7 (5-7) in the tiebreaker.  Ladies and Gentlemen, that is as close as they come for one set.  The second second eventually went the Tiger's way with an off service game from Sophia allowing the Tigers to take the break and finish out the set - Tigers taking the 2nd set 6-3.  Though the match didn't break the longest match (time) this season, it does rank in Sophia's top three matches in length of the season.

Court #6 featured our lone freshman (Mai Vo) in the top 6 battling hard agains a well seasoned Jr.  Dropping a tight first set 4-6, Mai quickly got her mind back in the game and destroyed her opponent 6-1 in the second pushing thhe match into the third set - a ten point super tiebreaker.  Exhausted by a cold and her off the hook play the second set, Mai succombed to a very consistent Tiger, losing 5-10.

Our lone win in singles went to Erin Shelton whose playing style took her opponent totally off guard - winning 2 and 3 in short order.

Having the match decided in singles, our attention turned to doubles.  With a change up with the lineup, Nagy/Shelton took on the #2 dubs team from Ragsdale.  Though losing 6-8 in a very tight match, the moral victory definitely went to the Cowgirls for their play was above reproach.  In the fading light, the cowgirls finally lost serve and with 4 dueces in what became the last game, lost the match.  They held tight to a very talented and hard hitting team.  Way to go Ladies!

The final two doubles of the evening went to the Cowgirls handedly with the Tigers only garnering 2 games between the two matches.

Final score for the night was 3-6, Tigers winning.

Southwest Falls to 9-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
