Southwest Cowgirls Tennis traveled to the Western Lady Hornets

Teams come in all sizes and varieties.  Some fit just right making for a great night of play.  Some are too big, hiding the great shots the girls have worked on during practice and in fact, nearly smother you.  While others seem much too small to properly fit.  This last scenario was the case with Western tonight.

Western’s Lady Hornets graduated off half of their team last June and though repopulated in numbers, the talent and depth they once had hasn’t come back in the same measure.  They played very well according to their skill, but there is much to learn in play when a team has to rebuild.

Seeing the rain coming on radar and the dark clouds in the distance, the ladies took to the courts.  The Cowgirls from top down immediately took their first several games and were in control of their respective matches.  Courts 1-3 of the Hornets proved the greatest challenges of the night.

Kyra Akande held all but one serve while breaking all but one from her opponent.  That isn’t to say the play was lopsided, no!  Rather, Kyra’s smooth and spin heavy pace proved difficult for the Lady Hornet to control the point.  Krya, 8-3.

Ellen Druebbisch coming off a tough match with Wesleyan last night jumped to an early lead and maintained it breaking her opponent 4 times in a 8-0 romp.  Ellen’s placement and footwork proved too much for her opponent.

Meghan Whalen, playing on court 3, again, coming off a tough match v Wesleyan last night, was able to hold serve throughout her play and keep her opponent on and behind the baseline with an improved focus on spin and depth of play.  8-0.

Kristen Taylor, Gretchen Cross, and Johaina Apolinario all were able to sweep their opponents in scoring.  The Lady Hornets fought hard, but the Cowgirl talent held its own in the 6-0 sweep in singles.

As the last Cowgirl was coming off the courts, the lightening meter erupted, Dubs were not to be had on this stormy night.

The Cowgirls improve their season to 2-1 in non conference play and look toward HPCA on Thursday afternoon.
