Home v Ragsdale

Having survived the torrential downpours week one practice, the Cowgirls were able to get out to the courts in between the thunderstorms and get some quality hitting time.

Playing an invitation on Friday night gave the Cowgirls confidence in their own abilities, we faced off against Ragsdale. Ragsdale, as the Cowgirls did likewise, lost several of their big hitters from the top six.  Games of attrition are a mixed bag ad one can only hope for the best.

Lauren Cook, new to the top six, came off with a strong performance downing her opponent 10 games to 2. Lanie Van Dorp soon followed bettering her predecessor’s score 10-1.

Alethea Yu and Johaina Apolinario soon followed from courts five and six taking their opponents to task 10-2, 10-3 respectively.

Now 4-0 in singles, the rest the match remained on the shoulders of number one Meghan Whalen and number to Gretchen Cross. Meghan was in a slugfest with Ragsdale’s number one Ellie Ramsey. They traded shots, they traded serves, and yet no one was up a break.

Gretchen found fertile ground in a break going up 5-3 midway through her pro 10. Capitalizing on this advantage, Gretchen was able to massage her lead winning 10-6 at final count. Gretchen showed great restraint and movement of the ball deep and side to side forcing her opponent out of her element that ultimately won her the match.

Court number one became a consistency test. Megan up 7-6 still on serve, was able to break her opponent and hold served going up 9-6. Breaking Ellie one more time, Meghan was able to outlast the clearly fatigued number one Player from Ragsdale thus giving her the match.

Heat and conditioning was a big component of today’s win.

Cowgirls, having swept single 6-0, was able to focus in on doubles. Whalen/Cross took Court, #1 easily defeating Ragsdale‘s number 1/2 combo.  Cook and Yu battled well taking out their opponents 8-3 in a baseline rally filled match. Using Lauren’s height and Alethea’s consistent baseline shots they were able to overcome their opponents. New to the top six, Avery McCaskill and Holly Galvan completed the doubles trifecta taking out their opponents 8-2 in a spirited match which showed great restraint on over hitting and well placed shots to take the win.
