Southwest cowgirls over the lady by scene of High Point Central 6–3 in non-conference tennis action

With a high of 79° today, I knew tonight was gonna be a glorious night to play tennis.

Bea Calwitan was the first off the courts tonight.  Registering not only a win, but also the shortest time of the season clocking in at 25 mins for her efforts.

Abby Lowe and Lanie Van Dorp also exited quickly, taking a win on both courts without much fanfare.

Meghan Whalen ran afoul of a very consistent and deep hitter losing ground, gaining a break, but ultimately succumbing to a good talent on the court from HPC.

Christina Alentino was in good form, unable to convert her opponents initial serve, Christina sweep the rest of her and her opponents serves giving the Cowgirls. 4-1 lead with only one court to go.

Gretchen battled valiantly on court 3 but was unable to make headway allowing an outside chance for the Bison for a victory if they swept singles.

But let’s be honest, that was going to be a very long shot.

4-2 Cowgirls up

Dubs:

Playing Whalen and Cross at number 1, looking for vindication on their single performance, Lauren Cook/Alethea Yu on court 2, and newcomers Lydia Specht/Avery McCaskill on court 3.

But Coach, isn’t the goal of every match to win? Not really. My philosophy behind the play is simply to allow the girls to play their talent spots and in doing so, the girls should play to their potential and ultimately the cowgirl should garner the win.

The cowgirls needed only one win.  Coach played up so the Cowgirls had a challenge.

Down 1-2 on 3

Down 2-3 on 2

Up 3-0 on 1

Court 3

It was a lot of give and take throughout the match.  The cowgirls would break, the bison would break back. Down 4-5 the cowgirls served to even it up.

5-5

Taking the break, up 6-5

Every game was filled with multiple deuces, long rallies, and a lot of running.

Court 2

Again, holding serve, 3-4.

Gaining a break, 4-4, but losing their serve, 4-5.

Breaking, holding

A quality match that simply didn’t go our way.

Back to court 1

Up now 5-0, it felt like we were getting complacent.

5-1

5-2

5-3

Still in control, raise the game

6-3

6-4

7-4

7-5

And with a push and excellent net, Whalen and cross gain their redemption with a victory on court 1 dubs 8-5.

Serves were on, play was crisp, a different set of ladies than from singles.  Yes, it was very good play.

Gaining the victory, gravy is always nice.

Up 6-5 on court 3, the cowgirls and the bison began to gridlock. Each game, as mentioned before, going to deuce, multiple times. Avery alone serves more than 9 times in her service game to take it to 7-5.

The bison kept pushing. Adjusting at the net, all players growing tired, 2 deuce points before a great series of points, three to be exact, deep to Avery, cross court back and deep to the bison, directly at Lydia at the net, a short pop off her strings and behind and away from the bison the ball did go.

Three times.

A win on court three bringing the night’s match count to 6-3, cowgirl victory.

The Cowgirls raise to 6-0 in non-conference play. They hope to continue their winning streak in their away match against the Lady Eagles of East Forsyth on Monday.
