Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Southern Alamance HS

Game Date
Dec 3, 2013
Score
COWBOYS: 96
SOUTHERN ALAMANCE HS: 65

The Patriots of Southern Alamance traveled to Southwest to square off against the Cowboys in an early season matchup. The Cowboys handled the Patriots last season 91-58, but that was last year. The Patriots are coming off a victory over Graham while the Cowboys are coming off a victory over Grimsley. Coming into tonight's action however, the Cowboys hadn't played a game in well over a week. Would the long layoff and big turkey meals slow them down? From the start of the game it appeared that the Cowboys were still sitting at the dinner table. The Patriots came out of the gate on fire hitting three straight 3 pointers while the Cowboys were lethargic and slow to the ball. The visitors were up 11-6 before long. The Cowboys a least become somewhat aware that a game was going on and went on a 9-4 run to tie the ball game up at 15 at the 2:32 mark. Southern Alamance quickly retook the lead on the next possession. After a Cowboy free-throw, a steal and then a 3 pointer the Cowboys took the lead for the first time in the game at 19-17 with 1:20 remaining. The lead didn't last long as the Patriots responded right away. The Cowboys then used a little 8-3 spurt to close out the first frame at 27-22 as neither team really wanted to play much defense. The second quarter was the opposite as both teams turned the ball over repeatedly and couldn't put the ball in the basket. The teams played a near stale mate frame with the Patriots winning the sloppy frame 13-10, with the Cowboys holding a slim 37-35 lead headed into the break. A plea to wake up and play together and step away from the Thanksgiving table helped awaken the quick Cowboys. The second half actually opened with a quick 4-0 spurt by the Patriots. The teams traded points and it was tied at 41 with 5:30 on the clock. From there, the rest of the night belonged to the hosts. A swarming defense (21 steals) and up-tempo was just too much for the Patriots. The Cowboys used a 12-0 run in the frame to put it at 61-45 at after the third. The final frame was the same theme as an all around team effort by Southwest on the defensive side of the ball and held the Patriots to just 10 points and ran away for a convincing 96-65 victory. The Patriots were led by Carrington Young with 18 points. The Cowboys were led by DJ Chamblee (16, 7 Rebs, 6 Asts, 4 Stls), Ben Ferguson (15, 4 Reb, 4 Stls), Cedric Morgan (12 points), and Tyliek Brister (10, 5 Reb, 4 Ast).
